Grassroots Design

Extinction Rebellion (XR) is a decentralized, international movement using nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience to demand action against climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecological collapse.

Founded in the UK in 2018, its message is direct:

  • Tell the truth: Governments must declare a climate and ecological emergency.
  • Act now: Governments must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero.
  • Go beyond politics: Governments must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.

Logo Design

The hourglass-like extinction icon predates Extinction Rebellion. Created in 2011 by the anonymous East London street artist ESP, it represents Earth and the warning that time is running out. The symbol circulated independently for years before XR adopted it (with permission) in 2018.

I’ll be posting more about this amazing story soon.
